Live! The Realest MC
Inspired by Pinocchio's
plight to be a "real boy," Kyle Abraham’s new ensemble dance
work investigates gender roles in the black community and the quest for
acceptance in the world of hip-hop celebrity. Live! The Realest MC, an
evolution of previous solo work by Abraham, references our own humanity in this
digital age, creating an abstracted and humorously dark narrative that places
the iconic childhood character in an industrial dystopia.
Featuring dancers Rena Butler, Elyse Morris, Chalvar Monteiro, Rachelle Rafailedes, Hsiao-Jou Tang, and Maleek Malaki Washington; lighting design by Dan Scully and costume design by Kristi Wood; with visual artwork by Carrie Schneider.
This project is supported by The MAP Fund, which is generously supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This work was created, in part, during a Creative Development Residency at the Bates Dance Festival and was created by Kyle Abraham to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS, with generous support from Major Choreographic Sponsor Rockefeller Brothers Fund and from Choreographic Sponsors David DeMuro and Chris Longobucco.
This work was developed, in part, through a Danspace Project residency at the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance (ICPP) at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and through a 651 ARTS, Artist Development Initiative residency at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, NY. Live! The Realest MC is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project, co-commissioned by Miami Dade College in partnership with On The Boards, Bates Dance Festival, Dance Place, 651 ARTS and NPN.
