In conjunction with the exhibition Invisible Geographies: New Sound Art from Germany, Berlin-based artist Carsten Nicolai, whose minimalist, post-techno music is released under the name alva noto, presents the United States premiere of his latest live solo work for laptop and video. Using a range of quotidian audio and visual sources, including Muzak, melodies from TV advertisements, and elevator bell tones, Nicolai submits this material to a series of compressions, multiplications, scale changes, and shifts in resolution that gradually progress into digital noise and visual abstraction.

They Heart a Computer

Curated by Lauren Cornell as part of Rhizome’s Tenth Anniversary Festival, this evening of live performances and video screenings explores forms of expression, desire, and anxiety prevalent in a culture increasingly influenced by the Internet. Doo Man Group (made up of Ben Jones, Jessica Ciocci, and Jacob Ciocci of Paper Rad) interweaves live percussion with a dense collage of web-based visual ephemera. Jona Bechtolt (of Yacht) and Claire L. Evans combine music, dance, and PowerPoint to explore the possibilities and fallacies embedded in online communities. In addition, videos by Michael Bell-Smith, JODI, Shana Moulton, Takeshi Murata, and humorist Ze Frank investigate how the Internet amplifies and exaggerates life offline.

An evening with A Public Space

As part of an ongoing conversation about literature and culture, Brigid Hughes, editor of A Public Space, presents Hot Water, High Kicks, and Hit Men, an evening of readings by three writers whose work is included in the second issue of the new Brooklyn-based magazine of literature and culture. The program includes Nam Le, who brings us to the gritty streets of Medellin, Columbia in his story “Cartagena”; Corinna Vallianatos, who introduces us to a lonely middle-aged woman and her somnambulant lover in her story “A Civilizing Effect”; and visual artist Lauren Redniss, who introduces the audience to Doris Eaton Travis through excerpted text and images from her illustrated guide titled “Century Girl: The Last Living Star of the Ziegfeld Follies.”

Alarm Will Sound

The twenty-member new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound (AWS) is known for innovative, genre-bending projects including their recent recording of music by Aphex Twin. As part of its Kitchen residency, AWS premieres arrangements of Conlon Nancarrow’s groundbreaking player piano studies from the 1930s that combined the harmonic language of early jazz and blues with extraordinarily complicated metrical schemes. The evenings also include other live instrumental evocations of the technological present and machine-dominated past by Harrison Birtwistle, AWS member Dennis DeSantis, Benedict Mason. In addition, AWS performs its latest work-in-progress - arrangements of early music from the 14th century which anticipated the rhythmic complexity of Nancarrow and Mason long before mechanical performance was an option.

Best-known for involving a range of non-artists -- such as televangelists, psychics, and theorists -- in the creative development of his works, Christian Jankowski presents new and recent videos, films, photography, and sculpture that question traditional ideas of artistic authorship and experiment with commercial filmmaking conventions. Exploring in particular the genre of "horror," the works in this exhibition suggest how cinematic visions of monstrosity and violence can also communicate broader notions of transformation, revenge, and redemption. Angels of Revenge (2006), for instance, is a new video and series of photographs for which Jankowski asked participants at a horror film conference to recount acts of betrayal and tell stories of imagined retribution. Other featured works include Lycan Theorized (2006), a video intermixing excerpts from an upcoming straight-to-DVD werewolf movie with alternate scenes devised by Jankowski; and a new 16mm silent film titled Playing Frankenstein (2006).

An evening with Esopus

In conjunction with the release of its seventh issue, the biannual non-profit arts magazine Esopus organizes an evening of readings and live music by past and present contributors. The evening’s theme--creative collaboration--is approached from four different angles by the four collaborating groups. For this event, film production designer Therese Deprez (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Happiness, Dark Water) and cinematographer Ellen Kuras (I Shot Andy Warhol, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), who have collaborated on three films, discuss the process of working together to create the look and tone of a feature film. Christopher Durang stages and co-performs a reading of a short parody of Medea that he co-wrote with Wendy Wasserstein in the late 1990’s. Finally, in "Autographs," an audio-visual presentation recorded exclusively for this event, actor/filmmaker Jennifer Jason Leigh reads a series of short poems by Vincent Katz, accompanied by projections of never-before-seen drawings by his father, artist Alex Katz. (The entire suite of 12 drawings and poems is published in Esopus 7). The evening ends with a performance by Charles Bissell and Kevin Whelan of the Wrens, an independent band which contributed a track to an Esopus-themed CD.

Avant-garde jazz pianist and composer Matthew Shipp creates distinctive compositions that exist at the intersection of free jazz, bebop, pop, and contemporary classical music. Known for his distinctive chordal statements and polyrhythmic passages, Shipp premieres a new commissioned work for piano and a string trio comprised of violist Mat Maneri, cellist Okkyung Lee, and bassist Mike Bisio as well as presents excerpts from his most recent solo piano album One (Thirsty Ear).

A Lecture about Tensegrity

In 1948 a young artist named Kenneth Snelson constructed an unusual sculpture - ethereal in appearance with no obvious weight-bearing elements which nonetheless retained its shape and stability. Snelson showed the form to his mentor, R. Buckminster Fuller, who adopted it as the centerpiece of his system of synergetics and gave it the name tensegrity, acknowledging its integrity under tension. Since the 1970s, mathematicians have studied tensegrity structures (such as spiderwebs, cabled roofs, robot arms, and the architecture of living cells) with special regard to their geometry. In this lecture, Dr. Robert Connelly, a mathematician at Cornell University and an expert on the geometry of rigid structures, will discuss tensegrities and explore the underlying question of why things don't fall down.

The Institute for Figuring is an educational organization dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of figures and figuring techniques. Cabinet is a quarterly non-profit arts and culture magazine.

Drawing on her performance work with The Wooster Group and the ideas of philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, choreographer Koosil-ja presents a new dance work built around two simultaneous, yet spatially disconnected solos that question the fundamental role of "presence" in performance and allude to an understanding of the "self" as a subject always in process. Created in collaboration with dancer Melissa F. Guerrero, Benton-C Bainbridge (video), and Geoff Matters (music, video, and software design), Koosil-ja’s "live processing" performance method requires the dancers to synthesize, in real-time, the action depicted in multiple videos and then to generate, from these randomly combined sources, new movement that is neither pure improvisation nor set choreography, yielding unique results each evening.

This first New York solo exhibition by the Berlin-based artist Peter Welz is part of a series of collaborations with choreographer William Forsythe that stems from their shared interest in the work of Samuel Beckett. In this new project, a video depicting Forsythe's physical interpretation of a written phrase derived from Beckett is projected onto an architectural construction. This structure’s contours, in turn, are Welz's transposition of Forsythe's movements into abstract three-dimensional form. Combining elements of video, sculpture, and drawing, the installation offers a complex meditation on both the physical and mental processes by which we perceive, and make sense of, the figure in space.

By restaging quotidian situations and misunderstandings evident in archival records, Perlin explores the ways in which political machinations are reflected even in the simplest aspects of daily life.

An explosive hybrid performance of video and theatre, Dead Set #3 explores the embodiment of trauma through a synthesis of reenacted pirated dialogue, borrowed online chats, and choreographic action derived from sampled movement. An acid-drenched schizophrenic portrait reflecting the disturbing state of contemporary life subsumed within increasingly brutal media spectacles, Dead Set #3 wields the weapons of the information battlespace and turns them against their makers. A hypnotic and disturbing work from the vanguard of iconoclastic theatre.

"When we first performed Nottthing Is Importanttt at The Kitchen, in February 2007 it involved a non-narrative movie featuring two familiar but unrelated icons of American folklore. Just before the movie, a stream of live actions was performed by a group of nine intensely focused individuals. The movie's soundscore fractured and connected the space between looking and listening. When the movie was over, we brought the audience into a new environment, where the performers continued their tasks in darkness, and the sounds shifted from being the element in between, to being space itself, the architecture, and everything it contained."

Salon 6x6: An evening with Ugly Duckling Presse

In conjunction with the release of the forthcoming issue of 6x6, a periodical that presents six pages of new poetry by six emerging poets, Ugly Duckling Presse (UDP) hosts an evening of readings and live music featuring past and forthcoming 6x6 contributors. The evening will feature readings by C.S. Carrier, Sawako Nakayasu, Cynthia Nelson, Matthew Rohrer, Evan Willner, and Lynn Xu and live music by Coraline, Chris Cogburn & Liz Tonne, Legends, and Rio en Medio. The nonprofit art & publishing collective UDP produces small to mid-size editions of new poetry, translations, lost works, and artist's books. UDP favors emerging, international, and "forgotten" writers with well-defined formal or conceptual projects that are difficult to place at other presses.

BARR (aka Brendan Fowler) is heady, hectic, disarmingly raw and real, music-driven, spoken word performance. Combining stressful sincerity, explosive drum beats, and electronic rhythms, BARR offers up inspirational messages as well as political and personal commentaries that break down boundaries between music and poetry. For the first time, BARR performs here as a four-piece band—featuring Fowler, Kevin Shea (drums), Ethan Swan (piano), and Corey Dieckman (bass)—and premieres new material from the upcoming album, Summary, released on the 5RC label. The evenings open with a solo set by Lucky Dragons (Luke Fischbeck).

For the past five years, BARR has played not just art venues and galleries–such as The Kitchen, David Kordansky gallery in Los Angels, The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and The Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati—but also rock clubs and basements as well as touring with indie rock bands such Tracy + the Plastics, Animal Collective, and Xiu Xiu.

Filmmaker, performance artist, and writer Miranda July returns to The Kitchen to present her new multi-media performance piece THINGS WE DON'T UNDERSTAND AND DEFINITELY ARE NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT, a tale of heartbreak and obsession that is so familiar you could tell it yourself. In fact, members of audience play lead and supporting roles in the performance. This work is also a look inside July’s filmmaking process; her next feature film revolves around the same themes and characters. July first received critical acclaim in New York for her performances at The Kitchen, Swan Tool (2001) and Love Diamond (2000). Most recently, she is best known as the writer and director of her feature length film Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005).

In response to a moment in America marked by tepid civic activism, widespread conservatism, and rampant consumerism, the artists in this exhibition create works in which the “political” is addressed indirectly through allegorical approaches and subtle contextual displacements. Borrowing visual idioms from the realms of advertising, the media, and interior design, these artists locate tangential points of protest that are slyly complicit with the terms of capitalism they often seek to undermine. At the same time, they investigate romanticized notions of outlaw culture and underground movements, questioning whether any position of political resistance remains out of reach of commercial co-optation.

Known for her psycho-sexual dance and performance works, Ann Liv Young and her company of three dancers present a new piece based on their unconventional adaptation of the popular story of Snow White, based on the original Grimm Brothers' fairy tale, a darker predecessor to the well-known animated Disney version.

Snow White features choreography and text by Ann Liv Young and performances by Ann Liv Young, Liz Santoro and Michael Guerrero.

Snow White contains explicit content and is intended for mature audiences only.

Young's Snow White was created as part of a FUSED residency in France.

An evening with Akashic Books

Akashic Books presents an evening of readings and discussion to celebrate the release of three recent publications. Literary legend Amiri Baraka will read excerpts from his new collection of short stories Tales of the Out & the Gone. He is joined by celebrated Mexican-American writer Felicia Luna Lemus reading from her groundbreaking second novel Like Son, and emerging novelist and playwright Aaron Petrovich offers selections from his debut novella The Session. A discussion with the authors will follow the reading.

Founded in 1997, Akashic Books is an award-winning small Brooklyn-based independent press focused on urban literary fiction and political nonfiction. Akashic was founded and is headed by Johnny Temple, the bassist of the rock group Girls Against Boys.

Artists Seth Price and Kelley Walker premiere a new collaborative video project which draws inspiration from the performance history at The Kitchen. New footage of a trio in the early stages of forming a band is juxtaposed with short excerpts of archival material from The Kitchen, reflecting both artists' continued exploration of how cultural archives, documentary material, and artistic legacies are assembled and made available for recirculation in the present.

Synesthetic lightshow pioneer Joshua White teams up with electronic musicians Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom for a new audiovisual collaboration, featuring selections from the duo’s debut album, The Days of Mars (DFA). Surging with layers of arpeggiated melody and performed entirely on analog synthesizers, their compositions serve a hypnotic counterpoint to the visual music of White’s legendary Joshua Light Show, which incorporates the liquid light techniques that established his reputation at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East during the late 1960s. Contributing video artists, including Bec Stupak (Honeygun Labs), add contemporary VJ practices into the mix.

Bozidar Brazda: Bread

In conjunction with the exhibition Just Kick It Till It Breaks, the New York-based artist Bozidar Brazda premieres a new mixed-media performance event which suggests both a retrospective banquet for a fictitious filmmaker as well as a courtroom saga in which the filmmaker is being tried for treason. Incorporating video projections, sculpture, food, and clothing, this interactive environment continues Brazda’s exploration of the juxtaposition of the visual and linguistic tropes of Eastern European socialism and Western capitalism.

Artist Ross Cisneros premieres a new performance inspired by the plight of the Crimean Tatar people that incorporates video and music composed by Stan Harrison. While he was stationed in Crimea in 1944, Joseph Beuys famously claimed to have been rescued by nomadic Tatars after his plane crashed. Not long after this possibly apocryphal event occurred, Stalin forced the Tatar people into exile from their homeland along the Black Sea to Uzbekistan, where many people perished from harsh conditions. Out of these connected narratives, Cisneros creates an abstract ceremony that combines history and myth, and explores issues of frontier, diaspora, and discovery.

A dead animal. Broken car parts. Decay. Ecsteriority1, by choreographer Kimberly Bartosik, is the first half of a new developing work. Collaborator Roderick Murray creates the lighting and set design. Performers are Tara Lorenzen and Matthew Winheld.

Choreographer Jennifer Allen’s latest work explores what it means to be “open” in an impossibly fast-paced and threatening world. The performance drops five women into a vast, empty landscape where they encounter unicorns, rainbows and other symbols of irrepressible youth. Open features live music by Chris Peck and David Nuss, video design by Deke Weaver, lighting by Roderick Murray, installations by Heidi Dorow and Bushwick Farms, and is performed by Allen, Eleanor Hullihan, Heather Olson, Jillian Peña, and Katy Pyle.

An evening with K48

In conjunction with the release of its sixth issue focusing on the theme of “prisons,” K48 organizes an evening of video and live music featuring contributing artists Tobias Bernstrup, Christophe Chemin, Martha Colburn, Annika Larsson, and Roxy Pain, among others. Taking inspiration from selfmade fanzines and underground youth culture, K48 is an annual independent publication on art, music, and culture founded in 2000 by artist Scott Hug.

In his first solo exhibition, artist Ralph Lemon, a renowned choreographer and dancer, presents drawings, paintings, and video works exploring a cultural history and proposed future of the American South. Revolving around Lemon’s long-standing collaborative relationship with Walter Carter, a 99-year old former sharecropper from Yazoo City, Mississippi, the works in the exhibition are connected by a complex personal iconography made up of references to the writer James Baldwin, conceptual artist Bruce Nauman, historical figures from the Civil Rights Movement, as well as twentieth century icons of American jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel music. The central figure of Walter ties these threads together, raising questions about memory, memorialization, and transcendence.

New York-based Argentinean composer and conductor Laura Andel premieres a newly commissioned 45-minute work titled Doble Mano for her nine-piece orchestra comprised of an unusually eclectic instrumentation that includes bandoneon, gamelan instruments, Fender Rhodes, accordion, vibraphone, cornet, viola, clarinets, piano, and double bass.

By writing scores that balance composition, textural improvisation, and compositional conducting, Andel creates with her ensemble unique sonic landscapes, sometimes ritualistic, built from musical elements from avant-garde jazz to contemporary classical. With Matt Bauder, Taylor Ho Bynum, Ken Filiano, Stephanie Griffin, Raul Jaurena, Carl Maguire, Ursel Schlicht, David Simons, Danny Tunick, and Andel’s conduction.

Doble Mano was funded in part by the Composer Assistance Program of the American Music Center and was partially developed during a residency at The Rockefeller Foundation / Bellagio Study Center in Italy and at Blue Mountain Center in New York.

The H&M High Line Festival

Performer and writer Ken Nordine performs a concert at The Kitchen as part of the inaugural H&M High Line Festival. Ken Nordine has been recording "Word Jazz" albums since 1955, including standouts Word Jazz, Son of Word Jazz, Next, and Volume Two. In 2006 Universal Records released an archival box set of the Dot Masters 1957-1960 called You're Getting Better, consisting of Nordine's first four albums. Other albums, include Stare with Your Ears, Colors, and A Transparent Mask. Nordine received Grammy Award nominations in 1984 for Stare with your Ears and in 1992 for The Devout Catalyst recorded with Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. Recently Nordine release a DVD called the eye is never filled aka Word Jazz in Morphing Pictures, featuring graphics done with vector math. Nordine is also an occasional contributor to All Things Considered on NPR.

The H&M High Line Festival is a new multi-discipline arts festival that will be curated each year by a different artist. The 2007 inaugural edition, curated by David Bowie, will run May 9th to 19th. The ten-day mash-up of music, film, comedy, visual art and performance will highlight some of David's favorite artists. The best of the best. The festival will take place in venues near the High Line, an elevated rail structure soon to open as a public open space which runs through the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hells Kitchen. A portion of ticket sales will go to benefit Friends of the High Line, the 501(c)3 organization currently working with the City of New York to transform the 1930's rail structure into a park, set to open in 2008.

Participating artists Maria Chavez, Angie Eng, Bradley Eros, Andy Graydon, Sarah Ibrahim, Zach Layton, Anthony Ptak, Joel Schlemowitz, Lary Seven, Ray Sweeten, and Keiko Uenishi each perform solos and duets that explore the subversions and rediscoveries connecting science, mystery, and desire.

An evening with SOFT TARGETS

SOFT TARGETS, an annual journal of poetry, artwork, theory, short fiction, found images, sound, and other ephemera, will host an evening of readings and performances from recent contributors and collaborators in conjunction with the release of SOFT TARGETS v.2.1. Artist Kalup Linzy will give a performance; writer Gary Lutz will read his story "Years of Age"; writer Ariana Reines will read poetry; and Mick Barr as Octis will perform his new solo guitar project.

SOFT TARGETS v.2.1 also features contributions from Alain Badiou, John Waters, Yto Barrada, Jean-Jacques Schuhl, Alexander Kluge, Christian Marclay, Tatiana Trouvé, Tiqqun and Orthrelm, among others. SOFT TARGETS is the tightest of rings; a narrowing, and not widening, gyre; neither a stately pleasure dome, nor the expansive hunger of a corporation. SOFT TARGETS is a colony. Brooklyn-based, free-bop jazz drummer and composer Pheeroan akLaff’s performances conjoin melodic patterns, rhythmic patterns, counterpoint, chordal voicings, and solo and group improvisation with the intent to arrive at a liberating place—be it harmonious or cacophonous. akLaff presents new compositions exploring international grooves and sensibilities for a quintet composed of himself, bassist Francis Mbappé, pianist Michael Cain, vocalists Kamillah akLaff and Amon Bey.

The evenings open with a performance by LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs, a writer, vocalist, and Harlem denizen whose work rigorously explores sound through a myriad of verse, language, and electronic vocal processing. Ridykeulous organizes an evening of overthrow and ruin. Interventions, recitations, videos, mediations, incantations, declarations, and performances will feature past contributors and new recruits including Justin Vivien Bond, A.K. Burns, robbinschilds, Dynasty Handbag, K8 Hardy and Stefan Tcherepnin, Haunted Horny Horror Woods, MEN (Jo & JD of Le Tigre), and Celeste Dupuy-Spencer. Founded by artists A.L. Steiner and Nicole Eisenman, Ridykeulous is a collaborative effort to capsize, contaminate, corrupt, debase, defeat, demolish, deprave, depress, destroy, extinguish, invalidate, invert, level, overthrow, overturn, pervert, poison, raze, reverse, ruin, sabotage, supersede, supplant, suppress, topple, tumble, undermine, upset, vitiate, and wreck the language commonly used to define Feminist or Lesbian art. Borrowing heavily from subversion, Ridykeulous aims to distill a cultural moment or tap into the blood and guts of an underground movement.

Bessie Award-winning artist Dean Moss and acclaimed choreographer Levi Gonzalez lead this experimental dance workshop focusing on practical and aesthetic issues relating to intent and meaning, performance styles, theatrical formatting, and the use of sound, media, and other visual elements. Participants are expected to bring five minutes of their work (solo recommended) to the workshop’s first day.
