Internships

Internships at The Kitchen are loosely structured to coordinate applicants' interests, backgrounds and schedules with the needs of our organization. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide financial assistance, housing, or stipends. We do offer interns contact with world class artists, invaluable work experience within a major international arts organization, and free access to all Kitchen performances during the internship period. All positions are needed all year round, including the summer months. All interns must be of at least college age. All prospective interns should read the descriptions below and apply for only those internships for which they are genuinely qualified.

Requirements for all positions:
Excellent communication, organizational and office skills are a must. Computer knowledge essential (Microsoft 2000 or XP, Excel, Access). Theater, Dance, Music, Arts Administration, or Production majors preferred but not required. Must be detail-oriented, and capable of working under pressure and on multiple jobs simultaneously. Must have initiative and enthusiasm.

Positions Available


Curatorial Fellowship
September 2010 - May 2011

This nine-month fellowship at one of New York’s foremost non-profit interdisciplinary arts spaces provides the opportunity to work closely with The Kitchen’s curatorial staff as well as with a wide range of performing and visual artists. Founded in the early 1970s, The Kitchen identifies, supports, and presents emerging and under-recognized artists working in the areas of video, dance, music, performance art, media arts, and literature. This fellowship includes a $2,500 stipend and requires a time commitment of 24 hours per week, beginning in mid-September 2010 and ending in May 2011.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual who is either currently enrolled in or who recently completed a graduate program. At least one year of professional arts administration experience and a broad interest in experimental approaches to contemporary art practice across the disciplines is also important. The Curatorial Fellow works with Kitchen staff on all phases of the exhibition and presentation process, including researching new projects, writing brochure and educational copy, and assisting with the implementation of current exhibitions and performances. The Curatorial Fellow also develops crucial experience interacting with key staff in the development and communications departments at the institution. 

Responsibilities may include: researching the work of emerging national and international artists for possible presentation at The Kitchen; corresponding with artists and guest curators; drafting press releases, wall texts, and project descriptions for the website; assisting with the logistical coordination of exhibitions, performances, and The Kitchen’s CD projects; serving as the liaison to dozens of artists participating in the annual benefit art auction; and assisting with the review and organization of artists’ submissions.

Curatorial Internship
The Curatorial intern assists with researching and organizing upcoming exhibitions, performances, and events at The Kitchen, including the development of timelines, checklists, and printed matter. Interns will be introduced to issues relating to contemporary visual and performing arts, and will obtain administrative and curatorial skills by aiding in daily operations, implementing short-term and long-term projects, and providing general support. Curatorial interns also assist with The Kitchen archives, CD releases, and media collection. The right match for this position will be a highly self-motivated and intelligent individual with strong written, organizational, and inter-personal communication skills, as well as an ability to manage time and juggle responsibilities efficiently. The individual should be familiar with the key ideas and figures in contemporary art and have a strong interest in time-based work (film, video, sound, and performance). Computer proficiency is a must, including experience with Microsoft Office especially Word and Excel on a PC platform. Candidate would ideally be able to commit to about 16-24 hours per week.  

Development and Marketing Internship
The Kitchen is seeking a Development and Marketing Intern, effective immediately. Intern will work with the Marketing and Development Assistant and the Development Manager on database input and management; foundation, government, and corporate grant research; gift acknowledgement and tracking; general office support; drafting and design of event invitations; administrative assistance on special projects, such as the Annual Spring Gala, Fall Art Auction, and special events, as needed. Intern will also work with the Marketing department to assist in aspects of press and marketing for The Kitchen including creating press paste-ups; creation of press kits; distribution of publicity materials; database updates; marketing research; scanning press and managing the digital paste-ups file; mailings and filing. Ideal candidate has excellent writing and communication skills, office skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office, Raiser's Edge Database Systems a plus. Candidate must also possess strong communication, writing and computer skills (Photoshop, Illustrator helpful), and must be detail-oriented and very organized. Ideally, candidate is able to commit 16-24 hours per week.

Technical Intern
Technical interns assist with all aspects of theatrical and gallery productions. Working alongside the Kitchen production staff, interns work on every production from load-in, technical rehearsals, performances, and load-out. Kitchen interns gain exposure to a variety of working styles and technical practices through working closely with some of the best designers and technicians in the world.  By working in this intense but friendly environment, Kitchen interns gain invaluable experience and contacts in a professional, world-renowned experimental theater / dance venue.  Candidates should possess basic production experience, and be available to work 20-32 hours per week. Proactive organizational skills and ability to multitask in an often-changing environment is a plus.
